Korito Heights caresses the slopes of the Pouakai range, nestled at the base of Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki.
It’s wet, it’s wild, it’s simple and it’s perfect.
Tucked away on a 300-acre drystock farm at the base of the Pouakai Range which boasts Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki (formerly known as Egmont National Park), Korito Heights welcomes guests to the Hut.
Offering a true off-grid experience surrounded by native bush, farmland and sweeping views from Kawhia in the north to the Central Plateau in the east, the Hut is a rustic, rural delight.
A 1km walk leads you to a peaceful, nature-filled destination. Unwind by the outdoor fire as native birdsong and mountain air envelop you.
The Hut
The Hut sleeps up to 9 and is equipped with only the essentials — cold running water, a flushing toilet and a BBQ.
Inside, you’ll find a double bed, two sturdy bunks for adults, a small fold-out couch for two and a mezzanine loft for two adventurous sleepers. A top bunk sleeps the ninth person, but is best suited for children or the brave! All beds have a pillow with a protector and case and mattresses with protectors, but you will need a sleeping bag.
The open plan area also accommodates a table and basic kitchen adorning most crockery, cutlery and utensil items.
There is no hot water, no shower, no fridge and no lights, oh, and definitely no wifi!
At almost 600 metres above sea level, temperatures can drop quickly and it rains A LOT!
There is no vehicle access, but a one kilometre walk with an elevation of approximately 100 metres, meanders alongside a young Douglas-fir plantation and mature pine forest. During the summer, guests can enjoy eating blackberries whilst listening to the threatened long-tailed cuckoo echoing up the valley. With the Hut being so close to Taranaki Maunga though, guests can expect an occasional dusting of snow too.
Unwind and reconnect with nature among the sounds of the grey warbler, tui and even the kārearea, but fall asleep to the haunting ruru and the whisper of the ancient rimu.
